Where on earth is it possible to be the "mayor" of an entire village for a couple of weeks? Even more incredibly so in a luxurious mountain village situated 1,100 metres high with 18 chalets and villas? Renate and Hubert Oberlader - the founders of the mountain village "Priesteregg" in Salzburg in Austria can make it happen for you.

REGULAR GUESTS ARE BOOKING THEIR CHALETS AND VILLAS IMMEDIATELY FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR

The passionate hosts, he; a qualified caterer, farmer and proud breeder of Galloway cattle, and she; a fitness spa master, trainer and masseuse, who together wrote a success story with the opening of the mountain village "Priestenegg" in December 2009, had to put a hold on the dream of the “mayor project”. Theoretically, yes it’s possible, but in reality it’s hardly feasible, they both say, because there are already too many satisfied regular guests who have reserved their chalet or villa within the same period for the following year. The idea that all the chalets and villas would be available to reserve at the same time is therefore from a practical standpoint, no longer the case.

THE HOST BAKES BREAD AND MAKES “KAISERSCHMARREN” IN A BIG PAN

Even if it doesn't work out with idea of being "mayor", a large family could still experience what it feels like to live in a small village, because amongst the chalets is quaint village square with a biotope, wooden footbridge and a stone oven where the hosts bake their own bread. Once a week, Hubert Oberlader invites guests to a large pan of homemade Kaiserschmarren or surprises holidaymakers with his freshly baked cakes. Below the village square, the "Huwis Alm" restaurant further tempts guests with their regional cuisine set in a traditional rustic atmosphere.

BETWEEN SNOW-COVERED GLACIERS AND PICTURESQUE VALLEYS

But where do you find this gem, the mountain village that stands out majestically and sublimely on a high plateau between 3,000-metre-high mountains, alpine pastures, meadows and deep forests?

It is located in Leogang in Salzburg's Pinzgau region, in an area between snow-covered glaciers, picturesque valleys and rushing mountain streams and waterfalls. In addition to the famous Hohe Tauern, the rolling hills of the Pinzgau Grass Mountains are also popular destinations. To the northeast of the district capital, Zell am See, the bizarrely craggy world of the Steinberge mountains rises into the sky. The nearby Grossglockner High Alpine Road from Fusch and the Krimml Waterfalls are also very popular with nature lovers. Those seeking the tranquillity off the beaten track can discover millennia-old mule tracks, idyllic alpine pastures, baroque pilgrimage churches and mystical mountain lakes in the area.

THE "ECK DER PRIESTER” (CORNER OF THE PRIESTS) HAS A 200-YEAR-OLD HISTORY

The land on which the "Priesteregg Premium ECO Resort" is located has a history rich in tradition, dating back to 1505. Today's license to distil schnapps is also established originally from that time. Since the liberation of the farmers in 1782, the family farm and the lands in the "Eck der Priester" have belonged to the Oberlader family, who have been farming them for over 200 years.

THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE CONSISTS OF 18 HOUSES IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES

The mountain village of Priesteregg consists of a total of 18 houses, nine of which are in the "Mountain Chalet" category, five in the "Premium Chalet" category as well as a "Willy Bogner Chalet", the new "Wilderer Villa" and the "Villa Etaner". All five ground-level and eleven single-storey chalets are suitable for couples, although the Berg and Premium Chalets also offer enough living space for two adults and two children. The Wilderer Villa has two bedrooms and a large living area, the perfect accommodation for two couples or a family. On 250 square metres of living space, you’ll find find plenty of room in the Villa Etaner. Here, it’s two spacious bedrooms and the small cottage with room for six to eight people are especially inviting.

A FINNISH SAUNA AND AN ALPINE SWING ARE STANDARD HERE.

All chalets are equipped with a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, two bedrooms with a bathroom, a Finnish sauna, a hot tub and a small breakfast terrace, as well as an additional terrace with an alpine swing and sun loungers to relax on.

Step inside and the accommodations offer state-of-the-art comfort that reveals itself only at a second glance. Kitchen appliances such as a dishwasher, electric cooker, fridge and are built in alongside a hidden flat-screen TV. Rustic wooden fences guarantee privacy and the lush vegetation which includes native mountain pines, alpine roses as well as raspberries and blueberries let you experience nature in all its beauty. Since summer 2019, Berg Chalet guests have been able to look out onto a newly created moor biotope. Small footbridges lead to the shore, where it is wonderful to pause and relax.

New on offer from November 2022 is the "Villa Wossa", a premium chalet with a pool and natural bathing pond in the middle of the mountain village.

A SPECIAL CULINARY TREAT – THE HAT MEAL

The Pinzgau region in Salzburg is not only known for its incomparable landscape, but also for its culinary diversity. An absolute classic: the so-called hat dinner. An iron hat is placed in the middle of the nicely set table and heated with a burner. Hearty beef soup and delicious julienne vegetables are filled into the brim of the hat. Now everyone places the marinated meat from the pork loin and Galloway loin, prepared by the hosts, on the hot hat as they wish. It sizzles briefly, one can leave it shorter and have it medium, other can choose to cook longer and enjoy their cut well done, and a very special culinary treat is served.

ADVENTURE, ACTION & VARIETY AROUND THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE

In summer, the alpine landscape around the mountain village offers an almost limitless mountain experience. From diving in the natural swimming lake to the “literal high” of being on the on the mountain - in Saalfelden Leogang all this and more is awaiting you. The chalet village "Priesteregg", at the foot of the Leoganger Steinberge, is located in the middle of one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Alps. Directly in front of the chalet begins a network of more than 400 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails, which you can explore on foot or by (e-)mountain bike. Fixed-rope routes, trail running routes, two 18-hole golf courses and numerous swimming pools, as well as lakes, round out the range of possibility that summer can offer around the resort. Aside from the summer sporting classics, Pinzgau has a lot to offer: A special thrill awaits you rafting, paragliding or a taking a ride on the Flying Fox.

FROM THE CHALET DIRECTLY INTO THE SNOW TO EXPERIENCE WINTER MAGIC

Every year, when nature falls into its winter sleep and hides under the protective blanket of white snow crystals, a wonderful time begins around the mountain village. An adventure landscape of various activities reveals itself for an unforgettable winter holiday.

Whether skiing, (alpine or cross-country,) tobogganing, ice skating, snowshoe hiking or a taking a relaxing romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride - thanks to the wonderful location in the face of the Leoganger Steinberge mountains, your winter adventures get off to an incredible start. Guests can do many events directly from the front door of their chalet, while others are only a few minutes away.

COMMENT:

Whoever chooses the mountain village of Priesteregg for his vacation, I must be aware that here the clocks tick a little slower. It is a place of silence, of inner contemplation, where you can allow a certain distance from the hectic everyday life. But if you want to, you can go on an adventure and experience things in nature - both in summer and winter there are a variety of possibilities. This can also be a means to make you forget the stress for once.
